a Pleasant 4th

The 4th of July came very fast and I quickly realized that I had nothing to wear patriotic for church. Of course, when did I realize this?.... 1 am to be exact... the night before!

So Heather Bailey came to my rescue! :) I remembered a video and blog entry of her showing how to make these fabric flowers. I even made one for my craft room curtains a while ago which remains to be unblogged for the moment.

Thankfully, I had some left over patriotic fabric from my husband's in progress quilt. To save time, instead of the hand sewing, I used my machine to sew using very wide stitches so I could gather the fabric. A great time saver for sure. Instead of felt for the center, I hot glued a wooden button to finish off the look.

In order to attach it to my hair, I hot glued a felt circle and then attached a hair clip. This project was just what I needed to add to my vintage inspired hair-do. I just love it when things work out, even if it is at 1am. :)

It turned out to be a fun patriotic day with church in the morning, a potluck, church in the evening, and then time with my husbands family setting off fireworks and enjoying each others company.

Did I mention the pie? :)

Patriotic Promises....

When I first started quilting 2 years ago, my husband requested of me One Patriotic Quilt made for him. Excited he wanted me to make him something, I said yes. We picked out some of the fabric and stashed it away....

2 years later, I am making him his quilt! Granted it has taken forever, but in the end it is for the best. Top 3 reasons are: I have had lots of practice, I now know what I am doing (sort of, hehe), and I even have a new machine that is made for quilting.

We both agree it is good it has taken this long. He is very anxious to have this quilt finished as am I. It has been hanging over my head long enough. :P

I was busy cutting fabric out for the quilt when I turned my head and saw this: my 3 birds huddled together watching me cut fabric. Arent they cute? :)

Quilting for Soldiers

This past weekend I was able to join up with my quilting group. We meet once a month and quilt for our wounded soldiers. It really is a fun time to get together and quilt for a cause.

A couple months ago, I was working on a Mary Engelbreit quilt for myself using charm packs. I ended up with a lot of left over squares in colors that I didn't need.

Now this is a no-no in the quilting world, but I was thinking of tossing them. sshh....don't tell anybody. lol Anyways, I ended up realizing that they would make a great baby quilt! Not only does my group make patriotic quilts but they also make baby quilts for their families.

So, I ended up sewing together a quilt top using these fun fabric squares. Not being able to do the machine quilting part, a lovely lady and friend of mine from my group took it home for me, quilted it and even added the binding. She did a great job!

I'm so excited because this last meeting, I was able to find out where this blanket was going! :) It is the first quilt that I have made that is going to a soldiers family. This baby blanket along with the lovely patriotic quilt below is going to a very special local family. This soldier came home wounded and woke up from a coma finding out that he was missing both of his limbs and that his wife just had their baby. They are having a homecoming celebration for him and will be presenting his family with these 2 quilts.

It is so fun and exciting to see these quilts we make go to such special families who put their life on the line for us and our country. What special men and women in the service we have.

Red, White, and Blue Tutorial...

Happy July 4th!

I hope everybody has a great July 4th tomorrow! My husband gets the day off today, so we are going on a photography spree at the Marina. But before we head out, I wanted to share with you this fun craft tutorial: Safety Pin Flag, pdf.

A great way to show some patriotic flair this July 4th!

Enjoy!

Quilt Top for Wounded a Soldier

In January, I joined a quilting group that makes quilts for Quilts of Valor. We meet once a month and quilt like crazy! Yesterday, I finished my first Quilt Top (minus the borders) and wanted to share it with you! The pattern I used was in the Spring 2009 edition of Quilts And More. It was the first time I ever followed a pattern. It was a blast!
